The Sigma has so far solved my wide end problems for a very small investment. One has to figure out the priorities to fit the budget. Would sure love the two others as well, but. I have one end of that trio - shooting sports like I do, the 70-200 is my best friend and a lens I just can't get by without. but if money was no issue, I'd be shooting the magic 2.8 trio by now

To be honest, more than a 14-24, I'd be more interested in a PC-E lens, like the 24. Now, if somebody with the same lens on D700 has different results, I'd like to hear that! And I'd love to hear also of the mysterious 20-40 2.8.

there are surely better wideangles out there, but at this price, and with such a funny 15mm, I really am surprised by the Sigma (and will probably channel the saved money towards a future upgrade of the 80-200 afs to a 70-200 vr II I paied 230€ for it in wonderful condition and with all its accessories/box a used 12-24 goes for 500€ 2nd hand in Italy, and a Nikon 17-35. Even shooting into the sun is not as bad as I was led to believe by some reviews: yes, sometimes you can get weird small colour bands, but it doesn't seem to be more or worse than the 11-16 2.8 we use on the D90, in itself a very regarded lens and stopping down makes the sun very nicely star shaped.Īnother nice surprise is that out of focus rendition is very beautiful and creamy even stopping down when focusing near the short limit.Īnd I do like the general colour rendition, which is saturated but not too warm or cold. Like the lens! It focuses reliably and extremely quickly, is very sharp in the center, and the 30cm minimum focus distance grants nice dramatic perspectives. Last, the painful "issues": the extreme corners never really get sharp I mean theĮxtreme corners, at the very sides of the image, but alas, small as they are, they are soft even by F11 not "mushy", but not as sharp as the center distorsions are quite pronounced, especially at the 15mm end, although I've found out that they are corrected by PTLens even under Aperture for Mac.Ĭonclusions after a hundred or so shots: despite the flaws, I

"Longer" focals are generally softer wide open not a big deal, as I'm interested in the 15-24 range.

Strangely, it doesn't bother really in real world pictures, but shooting a white wall shows mesmerizing resultsīy F5.6 vignetting is fading, and sharpness increasing all the other focals suffer from vignetting wide open, although by 24 and more, it clears sooner by stopping down. In terms of size (it's very large, although surprisingly light) but image quality wise it's a really complicated matter.įirst, the lens (my copy at least) is a lot sharper in the superwide end than in the 30mm one 15mm wide open gets me lots of central sharpness, with some softer corners.

Given that information about this lens on full frame is a little scarce, I bit the bullet on a mint 2nd hand sample and crossed my fingersĪbsolutely not a "review", but just a collection of impressions about a lens I'm finding extremely pleasing and that I am keeping often on the D700.įirst result, my D700 likes the Sigma 15-30
